Visit Area Shelters

Step 4: When looking for your lost pet, never "assume" staff at area shelters will recognize your pet from your description! These people see many dogs each day, and hear many animals described, but they can't possibly recognize them from flyers or telephone descriptions. GO TO THE SHELTER YOURSELF and view every animal there. If you don't see your pet in the "public" viewing area, ask at the front desk if they have any dogs/cats who are isolated (not on view of the public (shelters will isolate animals if they are showing any signs of illness or injury; if they are overly scared and timid; or overly aggressive).

While at the shelter, file a lost report and leave a photo of your pet. Remember to check back in person every other day -- shelters only keep strays for 5-7 days -- if you don't check back frequently, you could miss out on finding your pet.

Also, don't assume that if picked up as a stray, your pet would be taken to your county's shelter. If picked up near the county line or just over the line, he/she could be taken to the shelter in a bordering county. So check all nearby shelters.

Below is a listing of the shelters in bordering counties. Make a personal visit -- it may save your pet's life!
